Favorite Sushi Spots

There’s just something about summer, maybe because it’s bathing suit season, that has us eating fresher, lighter meals. Sushi is one of those things that falls well within that category, but it’s also one of those things that we could eat everyday because it’s that good. Luckily, with Richmond being the foodie capital that it is, there’s no shortage of great sushi spots to choose from. And even though we haven’t tried all of the sushi restaurants that Richmond has to offer–and can’t say that these are the absolute best–they’re definitely some local favorites.

Hiro Sushi- Midlothian Turnpike

This hidden gem is my go-to in Midlothian. You wouldn’t think much of it looking from the outside, being that it’s in an inconspicuous strip mall, but it’s some of the best sushi around. Everything is very fresh and just delicious. The menu has great variety and a lot to choose from, plus the service is always fantastic and the cute drawings on each plate are a nice touch. Try the Sweet Oyster Roll, it’s something a little different than your typical sushi roll and it’s one of my favorites.

Downtown’s Sticky Rice isn’t your typical sushi restaurant, I mean they sell tater tots for goodness sakes. But their menu of unusual sushi rolls makes it amazing in my book. They think outside the box, and isn’t that what we expect from those quirky downtown restaurants? It’s one of the reasons I love Richmond dining so much. A favorite is the Snap, Crackle, Pop! with its fresh salmon, cucumber, tempura crunch, and spice from the jalapenos, wasabi mayo, and spicy sauce. Delicious and a spot you’ll want to return to just to try all they have to offer. And seriously, try the tots!

Osaka Sushi & Steak- Huguenot Road

For a date night sushi spot, we love Osaka. Located near the University of Richmond, it’s a more upscale sushi restaurant that offers more than just that. Not only do they offer fresh sushi and sashimi, they also have fantastic steak, lamb, and seafood dishes with an Asian fusion flair. I love trying all of their signature sushi rolls with the appropriately Richmond named Chesapeake Bay Roll and James Roll being among my favorites.

Akida Japanese Restaurant- N. Sheppard St.

Our final selection for favorite sushi in the RVA is not only a favorite of ours, but all of Richmond. Akida has been voted Best Sushi in Style Weekly’s annual Best of Richmond issue several years in a row, from 2013 to 2017. They may be just a hole in the wall spot, but there’s no denying the droves of locals that frequent this establishment and love their delicious, melt in your mouth options and reasonable prices.
