Richmond Greek Festival

Today marks the beginning of the 43rd annual Richmond Greek Festival which takes place at Sts. Constantine & Helen Greek Orthodox Cathedral on Malvern Avenue. This event is a local favorite and boasts some absolutely delicious Greek fare along with entertainment and an Agora Marketplace, which is an ode to ancient Greek meeting places where vendors met in the city center to sell their goods.

Enjoy traditional Greek dishes like Moussaka, Souvlaki, Spanakopita, Gyros, Dolmades, and much more. The lamb chops marinated in Greek seasoning are YUM! And the desserts are a must with treats like Baklava, Galatoboureko (vanilla custard covered in phyllo dough and syrup), and Kolourakia (twisted vanilla butter cookies with eggwash).

The Agora Marketplace will showcase local vendors with a variety of items for sale. Everything from olive oil, to home goods, to clothing and jewelry, and more. Visit shops like Dimitri Olive Oil, White Oak Lavender Farm, Gillian’s Boutique, and Pampered Chef to do a little shopping during your time at the festival.

Richmond-Greek-Festival-VirginiaTo kick off the festival, tonight (Thursday, May 31) the host’s choir will be performing traditional Orthodox music in the cathedral’s sanctuary at 8 pm. And throughout the weekend they will feature entertainment from Greek dancers and other musicians.

To get the full experience, we suggest spending some time at the festival to immerse yourself in the music, dancing and visiting the market, but if you’re in a hurry there’s always their convenient drive-thru option. Yep, you can drive right up and order lunch or dinner to go! Simply fill out the card on their website (or when you arrive) and the attendants will bring your meal right to your car.

The cathedral also donates a portion of their proceeds to local charities and this year’s beneficiaries are Jacob’s Chance, Relationship Foundation, ReEstablish Richmond, The Healing Place, and Peter Paul Development Center.
