Summertime festivals are plentiful here in RVA, and this one is special and for a great cause. Taking place this weekend, June 8-10, 2018, on picturesque Brown’s Island is The Festival of the River. Created to celebrate Chesapeake Bay Awareness Week, The City of Richmond, Venture Richmond, the Richmond Symphony, VCU Institute for Contemporary Art, Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay, 1708 Gallery, James River Association, Capital Region Collaborative, and many more local groups are partnering for this special three-day event. This one-time festival will showcase the very best of the James River, Chesapeake Bay and the Richmond Region.
The event will feature contemporary art installations, performances under the Symphony’s “Big Tent,” community cleanups along and around the River and Chesapeake Bay watershed, and family-friendly environmental education activities.
Friday night from 6pm-9:30pm Browns Island will host Friday Cheers with musical performances by Rhiannon Giddens and No BS! Brass Band along with the Richmond Symphony. Tickets are $10 per person.
Saturday will be a full afternoon/evening of (2pm-9pm) of river clean ups, contemporary music and art exhibits, Richmond Symphony performances, walking tours, and more.
On Sunday, the final day of the festival(11am-3pm), an aerial circus will perform, there will be a picnic and attendees will have the opportunity to be part of the creation of a “Richmond Community Member Quilt”, and a final performance by the Richmond Symphony will bring the festival to an end.
