Set away from the hustle and bustle of the city in rural Goochland County, Virginia is a craft brewery with views and beer that’ll have you coming back for more. Lickinghole Creek Brewery is Virginia’s first farm brewery that opened in 2013. It’s off the beaten path surrounded by 290 acres of nature with nothing but the sounds of birds chirping and live acoustics filling your ears. Their unusual name comes from Little Lickinghole Creek, which runs through the farm and was dubbed Lickinghole because of the wildlife that stopped to drink from its waters.
As you drive the long gravel road leading to its doors, the scenery makes you love this place immediately. At the end, all there is to see are trees and a large white barn-like structure with the brewery’s logo tattooed on its back. When you enter the building, there are giant metal barrels, a few picnic tables, and a small counter with two friendly faces to greet you and pour you a cold brew of your choice.
If you’re a first-timer, we recommend starting off your visit with a flight. This is your choice of four of their beers, all crafted in-house. They have a large selection of about fifteen or so at any time, and they rotate, giving repeat customers something new to try. This time of year, citrus flavors are favorites like their lime-zested Belgium Tripel, La Calavera Catrina, and their citrus flower and spice flavored IPA, Nuclear Nugget.
For fans of darker options, The Great Commander and all its Mexican spiced goodness is fantastic, and Enlightened Despot is a delicious bourbon barrel stout with notes of chocolate, vanilla, and, of course, bourbon. Those are just a few of our favorites, but truthfully, you can’t go wrong with any of their brews and they’ve got something for every taste.
If it’s a nice day, sitting outdoors, either on the patio or out in their expansive lawn, is a must. You can’t beat the views and they usually have a local musician on tap playing acoustics and a food truck offering up delicious eats. Lickinghole Creek is also host to many special events and feel free to bring the kids as they have a playground and lawn games for them to enjoy.
