Something we absolutely love to do during the summer and fall months here in Richmond is stroll our local farmers markets. Right now is peak season for freshly harvested fruits, vegetables, herbs, and other locally made foods and beverages. Richmond area farmers, bee keepers, gardeners, and the like work extremely hard year round to bring us fresh, delicious, local food and flowers, and every day of the week they gather at farmers markets to sell their product to us. There is just something special about produce, dairy, etc. fresh from the source. But, farmers markets aren’t just about the produce and foods. You can also find beautiful art pieces crafted by local artists, learn about non-profits in the area, listen to RVA based bands, and get a fantastic meal from a Richmond based food truck.
GrowRVA is the fantastic organization that connects local farmers and artists with our community. It was founded by Karen Grisevich, who had a dream of combining her love of art and food with her want to support local business. Her vision was to coordinate producer-only markets which means all products for sale are handmade, homegrown, or homemade in Virginia by the vendor. Here are a few to check out, and you can visit their website at growrva.com to find out even more about this fantastic organization, vendors at each market, and upcoming events.

Richmond also hosts several other markets that are organized by other local entities. One of the most popular and longest running Richmond farmer’s markets is the 17th Street Farmers’ Market. It’s been a gathering place since 1737 and has evolved and changed, but has always been about supporting community. This market also hosts special events and live music. Did we mention that it’s giant! Keep in mind, they will close this summer for a giant renovation project and will reopen this coming winter.
