Since it began in 2003, Bethlehem Walk has touched the hearts of visitors all around the Richmond area. Every December, Salem Baptist Church in Goochland County partners with other area churches to bring the story of the true meaning of Christmas to Virginia.
The Bethlehem Walk is a live, interactive nativity that takes guests through first century Bethlehem where the tradition of Christmas began. The sights, sounds, and smells take you back in time as you walk through the heart of the city and a bustling marketplace with authentic period shops. You can sample treats from the baker, see a blacksmith at work, admire potter’s crafts, and listen to the townspeople talk about the impending birth of Jesus. You’ll also walk through a range of scenes depicting the story of Jesus’ birth and how we came to celebrate it. It really is a beautiful experience. For anyone wanting to teach their children the true meaning of the holidays, remind themselves, or just be part of a great story it’s fantastic.
Thousands of people come out every year to be part of the magic and since it’s beginning over 70,000 tours have been given. It’s an event that a lot of Richmond residents have made a tradition of visiting every year. What we love about it is that instead of just sitting and simply watching the story be told, you’re actually part of it yourself. That element makes the experience that much more unforgettable.
Bethlehem Walk is located at Salem Baptist’s Broad Street campus in Goochland just 6 miles west of Short Pump. The tour is outdoors and takes approximately 45 minutes to go through, so be sure to dress appropriately for the weather. Wait times can range anywhere from no wait to as long as 1 to 3 hours. According to the church, the terrain isn’t suitable for wheelchairs; however they do have “chariots” to accommodate anyone that needs them. Admission to the event is free and ample parking is available on the property, though shuttle service is also provided to and from other parking locations when needed. Though the event is free of charge, they do accept donations to help with the costs of construction and maintenance of the Bethlehem Walk.
