The Town of Ashland, VA is a step back in time and the Ashland Theatre is a big part of the history that lives there. It originally opened in 1948 and just recently underwent an extensive renovation so that many more generations of Virginians can enjoy the “classic American movie experience”, as they lovingly call it.
This historic landmark was once on Preservation Virginia’s most endangered historic sites list, but after being donated by its owners to the Town of Ashland in 2013, a group of volunteers and locals brought love back to the place and eventually raised enough funds to renovate and re-open their beloved theater. You can still donate to their “Raise the Curtain” cause at ashlandtheatre.org
On December 26, 2018, they had a grand re-opening celebration to show-off the new digs featuring a state of the art 4K Sony projection system and 7.1 surround sound system, along with brand new plush seating, expanded concession stands and a VIP lounge with box seats to accommodate up to 300 patrons. The theatre is also planning some exciting new shows beginning in March, including live music by the Broadberry Entertainment Group, stand-up comedians, and other live performances to be announced in the coming months. For that, they have a separate sound and lighting system and two large dressing rooms to accommodate performers.
Beginning on Wed. Feb 6, you can see their lineup of Oscar nominated films. See their website for more details on that and other upcoming showings. And on February 24, they’ll be hosting their official Grand Opening celebration to coincide with the biggest night in movies, The Oscars! They’ll have a red carpet and will be broadcasting the awards show at 8PM.
I had the chance to visit the theatre recently and I’m already planning my next visit. There’s a magic to Virginia’s historic buildings that deserves to continue on so that future generations can experience it, and you really feel it when you see the marquis at the Ashland Theatre. It’s something special.
Skip the mall theater this weekend and take the family out to Ashland. Ticket prices for regular showings are $10 for Adults, $8 for Children (12 & under)/Student/Senior/Active Military, and Matinees are $6.50.
