If you want great shopping with local flair and quirk, Carytown is the mecca in Richmond. They’ve got everything from toy stores to bookstores to kitchen stores to clothing stores and everything in between flanked by some of Richmond’s best restaurants and bars. It’s one of our favorite places to be in the city and you’ll always find something different. Here are some of our favorite shops located on Cary Street.
Ladles and Linens Kitchen Shoppe
For all things kitchen, this is the place. We love browsing through all the treasures that can be found here. They offer high end brands like Le Creuset and All-Clad, plus gadgets, foods and drink mixes, bar ware, cutting boards, recipe books, glass ware, kitchen linens, and so much more.
If you’re getting married or having a housewarming, it’s the perfect place to register for gifts. And if you’re looking for a gift that’s less run-of-the-mill, you’ll find amazing options at Ladles & Linens. Even though it may seem sophisticated when you walk through the door, they have some really fun finds too! Just what you’d expect from a shop in Carytown.
On top of all of the great merch here, we are always welcomed with nothing but warmth and smiles at Ladles & Linens. The staff is fantastic and always ready to help find just what you’re looking for.
World of Mirth
One of our absolute favorite places to stop and peruse is World of Mirth. It’s a toy store for young and old with new items, as well as so much nostalgia. It brings out the kid in everyone. We love its charm and the fact that you can’t find what’s here anywhere else. This is the best place in Richmond to find a toy for the child you has everything or for something out of the ordinary. Sometimes we go in there just to play!
What you’ll find–board games, stuffed animals of every shape and size, vintage toys, new favorites, arts and crafts, and a whole lot more fun. It’s impossible to name all of the things you’ll find at Richmond’s favorite toy store, and to us it takes out the fun of discovering it for yourself.
Keeping with the spirit of fun and childhood magic, you have to visit Rocket Fizz when you’re in Carytown. You’ll really be like a kid in a candy store here. They have candies from all over the world, as well as from every generation.
When you step inside this wonderful candy store, you’re immediately transported into a whimsical world of sweets with an retro vibe that suits this part of town to perfection. It’s always so much fun to look around and see what’s new and to pick up some favorites from when we were kids. It’s sugar heaven.
They call themselves Richmond’s uncommon cards and gift store and we couldn’t find a better way to describe it. If you’re looking for a place with a great mixture of everything, go to Mongrel. They have all the things, from stationary and cards, to gifts for pets, notebooks and journals, gift wrap, home goods, items for the office, gag gifts, Richmond gear and more.
It’s another fantastic store where we could spend hours trying to look at everything they have to offer. We love Mongrel for birthday gifts, Christmas gifts, or just because gifts. And we always pick up something for ourselves.
Another stationary store we could never leave out of our favorites list is Paper Source. They specialize in all things paper goods, hence their name. Custom invitations, stationary sets, writing utensils, planners, calendars, journals, books, personalized items, and even some surprises, are what you’ll get from this lovely Carytown shop.
They also offer great workshops on card making, hand lettering & calligraphy, paper art, and even classes just for kids. We recently took a class on hand lettering and it was so much fun. Highly recommended!
Plan 9 Music
Last, but not least, is any music lover’s paradise. A Richmond staple for almost 30 years, Plan 9 is an independent record store, which is almost unheard of these days it seems, in the heart of Carytown. They offer new and used CDs and LPs in any genre you can think of, and also have a fantastic collection of used vinyl.
But possibly the best quality of Plan 9 is their passion for local bands. They are huge supporters of local talent. They promote their shows, host live in-store performances, and carry their music. If you’re looking for an authentic record store experience where the employees are huge music fans themselves with tons of knowledge and suggestions, you need to become of regular at Plan 9.
