Riverview Park is located in nearby Charlottesville, VA and is a gorgeous public park perfect for families and nature lovers to spend the day enjoying the outdoors. The park offers about 26 miles of land with walking trails, river activities, picnic facilities, a playground for the kids and more. You can find it at the end of Chesapeake Street bordering the picturesque Rivanna River.
A little background on Riverview Park: the land was donated in 1974 by Riverview Cemetary to be used as public space and in 1989 it was renovated into the park it is today. They added a paved parking area, kiosk, playground, benches, trails and plenty of ways to access the river for the enjoyment of anyone who wanted a place to play, relax, and be on the river.
The park is open daily from 6AM-9PM. Dogs are allowed off-leash in designated areas of the trail on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays and still welcomed on leashes all other times.
My family visited this area a few weeks ago and we spent the entire day picnicking, walking on the Rivanna Trail, playing on the play sets, and taking in the beauty of the river views. What we loved was that the park is accessible to everyone and everyone takes advantage. There were many other families enjoying a nice lunch outdoors, college students floating the river with friends, kayakers, runners, older folks walking their dogs, bicyclers, and others just enjoying a leisurely stroll. It’s a fantastic spot for a day of fun in the sun without having to travel too far or spend any (or much) money.
When I say you won’t have to spend much, I mean depending on your choice of activity. If you head to the park searching for water activities, you’ll pay to rent that equipment. There’s a station on the trail that offers kayaks, canoes, and tubing gear if you’re looking for a day on the water.
Whether you’re wanting a relaxing day outdoors with your family or something more adventurous, the beautiful slice of Charlottesville is a great place to be.
